Have you ever lived in a city all of your life, yet never truly LIVED in your city from a historical perspective? Working at one of the oldest African-American newspaper I have been exposed and educated on #BlackHistory. However, even though I was aware of Detroit being a point-place for escaped slaves from the south on the Underground Railroad or even the facts surrounding the 1967 riots in Detroit, I was not prepared for the enlightenment and emotions surrounding the day that was about to embark upon hosted by Toyota’s #SteppedInHistory tour.

I have lived in Detroit the majority of my life…yet, I’ve never experienced my city and it’s history the way I did this pass weekend with Toyota’s #SteepedInHistory tour. It was so DOPE to rep the D…

The day began with a select group of Detroit based digital influencers and journalists along with their plus ones (they named themselves the “Plus Ones”) noshing at black-owned weekend breakfast/brunch spot Le Petit Dejeuner. Introductions and anticipations of the day went alongside our carb-induced breakfast of creamed corned pancakes (TRUST ME, don’t knock it until you try it!) bacon, shrimp and grits and more. Quite assured we could not move and did not need to indulge in all the yumminess that was set before us, little did we know these carbs would be necessary for the journey ahead.

Once breakfast was completed, we ventured out in a caravan of Toyota Highlanders and Toyota Prius Primes to dive deep into the D’s connection to black history. With an ambitious schedule of sixteen stops from the well-known International Gateway to the Freedom Underground Railroad Monument and Detroit 1967 Rebellion Site to lesser known sites like the Birwood Wall and Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs (one of my favorites), we were lead by Baba Jamon of Black Scroll Tours.

Soooo many takeaways from my day touring with Toyota’s #SteepedInHistory Tour. (recap coming soon). However my favorite which is reflected in this picture, is the reinforced realization that when it…

LISTEN!!! Words and even pictures cannot tell the extent of how deep Jamon got into the stories behind Detroit most historic #BlackHistory sites. My favorite theme throughout was the reiteration that #BLACKGIRLMAGIC was at the forefront in shaping the narrative and progression of black history nationally and in Detroit.

After a full day of being fed intellectually our earlier pancakes had worn off and we closed the day at another black-owned restaurant, Beans and Cornbread. As we reflected on the day and how #Toyota’s #SteppedInHistory Tour left us wanting more, I couldn’t help the feeling of wanting more and was already anticipating planning a weekend with my girlfriends to #LetsGoPlaces to dive deeper into the stories of our history-rich city… the D!
